The importance of cleansing your face

Washing your face seems like the least complicated part of your routine, right?

Cleansing for me, and for many people is the most important step of  skincare regime. When skin comes into contact with pollution, dirt and toxins in the air, the cells are being attacked with free radicals that cause damage. But isn't there something amazing about coming home and cleansing your face? Washing off the day? Feeling clean, fresh and relaxed. And what is the best cleansing ritual for you?

If you are wondering about the secrets to this amazing cleansing, few informative steps to follow:

TIP 1: Pick the right cleanser

Are you the double-cleansing girl? Or do you usually reach for a simple, quick and efficient cleansing routine?

The right cleanser should completely remove dirt, impurities and makeup, but not strip your skin of its natural oils or healthy cells. Its key to find a gentle but effective cleanser with ideal pH level and /or mild exfoliation if required.

TIP 2: Stop overwashing you face

How many times a day do you wash your face? Do you always remove makeup when going to bed?

Washing once or twice a day is recommended for all skintype, mainly for oily and combination skin. For dry skin, depending on its conditions, it can be sufficient to cleanse with toner in the morning. However, its essential that you follow either a simple or a double-cleansing routine both in the morning and in the evening, as it's important to get rid of the dirt, oil and sebum that your skin produced overnight. At night, production of collagen is boosted, harmful free radicals are destroyed and cell damage is rectified. Its very important to your skincare regime to find the right cleansing balance depending on your skin type. However cleansing more times than twice can irritate skin and lead to an overproduction of oil. 

TIP 3: Overexfoliating

Do you prefer mechanical or chemical exfoliants? How often do you exfoliate?

Exfoliation is important for healthy skin as it remove dead skin cells. There are two types of exfoliation. Mechanical exfoliation is when you physically scrub your skin. Chemical exfoliants (like salicylic acid) remove dead skin cells by dissolving the "glue" that binds them to other cells. Which one to choose is depending on your preference and your skin type. If you have a normal or dry skin type, gentle mechanical or a gentle AHA exfoliator is recommended. For oilier and combination skin types, a gentle but efficient mechanical or BHA exfoliator (penetrates deep into pores and removes impurities from within) is recommended. Exfoliation for both, mechanical or chemical exfoliators should not be more often than 2-3 times a week depending on your skin type.

TIP 4: Using the wrong water temperature

Water should not be too warm or too calm. Water that is too warm can harm skin’s natural, protective oils and lead to over-drying or over production of sebum. Ideal is lukewarm water to cleanse gently and effectively. 

TIP 5: Using irritating ingredients

Do you always check the ingredients list or a websites like to make the right choices?

Avoid irritating ingredients such as fragrances, colorants, and synthetic preservatives such as parabens. Always read ingredient labels.

TIP 6: Towel rubbing

Pat, don’t rub. Rubbing tugs and pulls your skin, which puts your elastin at risk. Keep a clean, soft towel to blot your fresh face.
